The Course

Eagle Point Golf Club will be set up at 7,471 yards this week for the Wells Fargo Championship and from that length, it will play to a par of 72. The course is a 2000 Tom Fazio design and was last updated in 2015 when there was a bunker and stream renovation. The course record is held by PGA Tour pro Carl Pettersson at 62, he and Webb Simpson are the only two tour pros who are club members. Notable holes at Eagle Point include no. 17 with its elevated tee box the hole features a nice creek that runs along the left side. The par-3 tenth hole comes right out from the clubhouse and has views of the sound. marsh, and Figure Eight Island Bridge. The course is in incredible condition and many are saying it's the best all year next to Augusta National.

The Super

Craig Walsh is the golf course superintendent at Eagle Point Golf Club and has been at the course for three years now. Walsh is an alumnus of Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences. To help get the course ready for the tournament Marsh Benson the former head of grounds at Augusta National for nearly three decades was brought in. Following Benson's suggestion, the course removed sawgrass bushes and those areas were planted with grass and the course was also overseeded with ryegrass. The changes have created an incredible layout and the crew has done a great job getting it ready for its TV debut. I hope that the weather predicted for Friday misses them.

The Wells Fargo Championship was first played back in 2003 and Eagle Point is only the second course to host it. It has been held previously at Quail Hollow, four hours to the east, the host of this year's PGA Championship. The tournament aggregate record, set back in 2015, is 267 held be Rory McIlroy who also holds the record to par at -21. The players will tee it up this week for a $7.5 million dollar purse, $1.35 million of which will go to the winner. Some notable players are making their first starts since The Masters this week including Dustin Johnson who is returning from a back injury and is trying to get his 4th straight victory. Phil Mickelson also returns after his T22 at Augusta looking to get back into it for The Players and upcoming U.S. Open. The no-shows are glaring this week as past champions Rickie Fowler and Rory McIIroy are taking this week off. Along with them is Cameron Smith who will rest after his big win at the Zurich Classic before teeing it up at The Players.

The Favorites

Big fan of the tee markers this week.

Big fan of the tee markers this week.

Dustin Johnson is coming in at +450 but it is a risky pick as his back is still in question and has not been put through the rigor of a tournament yet. It might be best to wait until the weekend to place this one.

John Rahm who has been quiet since his disappointing Sunday at Augusta where he fell back to T27 might be able to correct his Sunday mishap and have success on the course that has been called "Augusta Point". Rahm comes in this week at +1,200 to win.

Webb Simpson, a course member has the most experience of any player in the field at Eagle Point. He's certainly a gamble though as he missed the cut twice in his last four starts and his only placed finishes were a T58 in Austin and T11 at the RBC. He opens at +3,300.
